As we get to the back end of summer, the days grow shorter and the temperatures drop, dog owners in the UK face a unique set of challenges when it comes to staying safe while enjoying walkies with our furry companions. Autumn and winter months mean darker mornings and evenings and increased opportunities for crime (particularly in lonely areas).

However, with the right knowledge and precautions, you can ensure your safety while keeping your dog happy. In this blog campaign (as part of the Eyes on Crime Key 7) we share seven key tips for crime prevention when walking your dog in winter.

1:Choose Well-Lit Routes:

One of the most effective ways to prevent crime during winter dog walks is to select well-lit routes. Stick to paths and streets with adequate lighting, and try to avoid secluded or poorly illuminated areas. Brightly lit streets can act as a deterrent for potential criminals and make you less of a target.

2:Stay Visible: Shorter daylight hours mean that you're more likely to be out walking your dog in the dark. Invest in reflective clothing and accessories for both you and your dog. Reflective collars, leads, and even a reflective vest for yourself can greatly increase your visibility to motorists and pedestrians. Consider getting a small torch or if your want to keep your hands free what about a headband with a light?

3:Walk in Groups:

There's safety in numbers. If possible, arrange to walk your dog with a friend or a group of trusted fellow dog owners in your area. Criminals are less likely to approach a group of people, and you can look out for each other.

4:Avoid Distractions:

While it's tempting to listen to music or chat on the phone during your walks, it's important to stay alert. Distracted walkers are easier targets for criminals. Keep your full attention on your surroundings, and be aware of your dog's behaviour, too.

5:Carry Personal Safety Items:

Consider carrying personal safety items like a whistle, personal alarm, and your phone. These items can help you deter potential threats or call for help in an emergency.

6:Let Someone Know Your Route

Inform a family member or friend about your walking route and expected return time. This way, someone will know when you should be back and can check in on you if you don't return as planned.

7:Trust Your Instincts

Your intuition is a powerful tool. If something feels off or you sense danger, don't hesitate to change your route, head back home, or seek help. Your safety and your dog's safety are paramount.

To Sum Up :

Walking your dog this autumn can be an enjoyable and safe experience when you take the necessary precautions. By following these seven key tips for crime prevention, you can reduce the risk of becoming a victim while keeping your dog happy and healthy. Stay safe, stay vigilant, and enjoy your winter walks in the UK
